A scene from Slumdog Millionaire

Good news is that Boyle & Co — yes, the elusive A R Rahman as well, are returning to Mumbai on the 20th to hold the Indian premiere of the film here. US and UK audiences have seen it already, but that was before Slumdog got Hollywood’s top entertainment critics’ recognition, now it’s India’s turn… and the anticipation for the award-winning film is huge.

The all-India release has been slated for Friday the 23rd, with a Hindi version — Slumdog Crorepati, also dubbed and readied for the janta. Boyle’s premiere is the previous night at the Imax Big Cinemas in Wadala. He wants it to be the largest premiere ever held in India and has invited all of Bollywood to fill the five screens on which the film will be shown. Before the start, Boyle will visit each screen to meet the audience, talk about Slumdog, and to thank Mumbai especially for helping him make it.

The evening will begin at 9 pm with Boyle and the cast of Slumdog walking the red carpet and taking photocalls. According to the film’s PR agents, the British director is excited about the premiere. He is reported to have said, “This is going to be like a homecoming, because Mumbai is where I started my journey, and now after showing it around the world and picking up so many international awards, the film is making a 360 degrees turn and returning to where it all began.” There is more. The Oscar nominations will be announced at 7.30 pm the same evening. Remember to congratulate Boyle when you see him… for getting the Golden Globes and making the Oscars shortlist. If you’re invited, that is.
