VISAKHAPATNAM: Beautiful stretch of virgin beaches, relatively safer waters and effective wave energy make Visakhapatnam, one of the most suitable places to conduct water sports. It was the thrill of surfing in the blue waters of the Indian coast that made Matt Volla and Chris Reardon bring down their surfing gears and explore the mighty sea in Visakhapatnam. They have come here from California for a seven-week trip. “The wave energy is very good here. The place has got excellent potentials for water sports,” says Matt. While he is a part of the directorial team of the underproduction Telugu film ‘Indumathi’, Chris is working on a documentary film on Bollywood and Tollywood industries. For the adventure enthusiasts, Visakhapatnam beaches are one of the finest ones in the world to conduct water sports.

However, though there is a good scope for conducting such activities in the region, adventure enthusiasts feel that there is a need to protect the beaches and seawaters from contamination and pollution. “The only problem is that the seawater in Rushikonda is not very clean. Taking into consideration the health factor, efforts should be taken to preserve the pristine waters,” says Chris.

Apart from being a popular tourist spot, Rushikonda has great potential for conducting water sports like yachting, surfing and kayaking and has been a host to several national level competitions. The Surfing Association of Vizag has been conducting sea surfing camps for the public at Rushikonda. To be a surfer, one should know swimming. The surfer has to first peddle inside the sea and then wait the bigger wave to ride on it. Normally, the 11th or the 12th wave has the power to carry the surfer to the shore.
